What is Gospel?

What is Gospel?

What is Gospel?

Google can now give you origin of words and their evolution over time without tedious research. The word gospel, according to Google has a Greek origin, “euangelion” meaning “good news“. Later on it has taken several forms such as God, news, story and so on. But I’m convinced that we don’t have to go that far. We can always look to the Bible for the truth. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) …that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16) …By this Gospel you are saved (1 Corinthians 15:1-2) Isn’t that a GOOD NEWS?

Now, for some, this might seem too good to be true and for others, this might not seem enough. How can we become part of something with no effort of our own? Men by nature have an urge to please others, work our way up and reap the benefits of what we sowed. That is exactly how some people felt back then. They had been in the law abiding sect for ages now and when they heard the gospel, they accepted it but it was not good enough for them. They were self-righteous and were happy about the way they were keeping the law. It made them feel good. They believed that the way to God’s kingdom was a little bit of both. What they didn’t realize was “For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. James 2:10

Paul admonishes the Galatians for turning away from the one gospel and giving in to false teachers. There was just no other way but one. “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1: 6-9

A different gospel just doesn’t exists. Paul is clear. Just don’t listen to anyone or anything that comes with a different gospel, other than the one mentioned explicitly in the Bible. Not even if it was from an angel from heaven. For anyone who preaches another gospel is trying to please men and gain acceptance from man and will be cursed. “For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10

Lord, thank you for your son Jesus Christ who gave Himself up for the redemption of our sins. Thank you for raising Him up from the dead so we could be justified. Help us to never put our trust and hopes on another but on you alone. Amen.

I enjoy learning from God’s word, it amazes me, the wisdom and treasures of God and the way He reveals them to me day after day in a profound manner. In this space I share with you what I’ve learnt through my time with the Word. I earnestly believe that learning alone isn’t sufficient but walking in the word is crucial in a believer’s life. As much as I desire to walk in the word, it’s not always easy. My hope is to encourage you, my dear friend, in your walk with God with words that He has used to strengthen my own walk with Him.
