Five Minute Friday : HAPPY

Today I’m writing along with many bloggers at Five Minute Friday on the topic HAPPY. We write for 5 minutes on a given topic, no edits. Before I begin today’s prompt I want to let you know that the Five Minute Friday’s host Kate Motaung and Susan Shipe of Hope, Heart, Home have compiled the FMF posts into a book. It will be released on the 26th of September and one of my posts is featured in the book! I am very excited and would be glad if you checked it out. Hop on to Kate’s blog for more information.

I didn’t know until today that there is a whole lot of debate going on over the idea that happiness is sinful. Christians are supposed to be joyful and not happy. As weird as that sounds for me, I went on to explore the real meaning of happiness and the difference between happiness and joy.

Let me break it down for you real simple. Happiness is a state of contentment and satisfaction. The opposite of which is dissatisfaction, worry, and unhappiness. Now does the Bible have to teach about worry? Of course, it does!

Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Matthew 6:25

Now while happiness may be a feeling when we are satisfied, we are called to be happy at all times. As a child of God, we are given the inherent hope and joy. In all situations, good or bad, we know that its not permanent, it’s fleeting. In light of eternity, everything is a passing cloud. We can choose to brood or we can choose to be happy.

Solomon talks about this in Ecclesiastes 3. I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives, and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor—it is the gift of God. Ecclesiastes 3:12-13

Happiness is a gift from God. He wants you to worry less and be happy all the days of your life. Here are some ways you can choose happiness over worry:

  • Count your blessing and name them one by one.
  • Remember God’s promises that He will see you through this.
  • Pray for the situation.

I enjoy learning from God’s word, it amazes me, the wisdom and treasures of God and the way He reveals them to me day after day in a profound manner. In this space I share with you what I’ve learnt through my time with the Word. I earnestly believe that learning alone isn’t sufficient but walking in the word is crucial in a believer’s life. As much as I desire to walk in the word, it’s not always easy. My hope is to encourage you, my dear friend, in your walk with God with words that He has used to strengthen my own walk with Him.
