Memory Verse Monday – Week 2

Memory Verse Monday – Week 2

I am so excited to be doing this memory verse challenge with you, so excited that I picked a slightly bigger verse, about 50 words to memorize. Because, when we memorize together, it’s more fun and makes it a lot easier. I hope you are ready for this week’s verse.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8

I know its a lot bigger than you would expect but bear with me for a moment and I’ll try to break it down for you. As with any verse you pick for memorization, you should understand the back story. In Joshua chapter 1, Moses is already dead and Joshua has been assigned as the new leader to lead the Israelites into the promised land. Sometime before, in Deuteronomy 31, Moses instructs Joshua about the law and how God has chosen him to be the next leader and how he was supposed to conduct himself. In this chapter however, it’s the Lord speaking directly to Joshua (Joshua 1:1)

The verse can be split into two, commandment and the reasons as to why Joshua needs to keep the commandments. The commandments can be categorized as two parts but the reasons or the outcome, they are three!

The Commandment

  • This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth,
  • but you shall meditate in it day and night

The Reasons

  • that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it
  • you will make your way prosperous
  • you will have good success

See, simple! You have all week to memorize this. You can do one part each day or however it works best for you. But don’t you agree that this is a great verse! Not just for Joshua, but anyone who is chosen by God, anyone who wants to lead a prosperous and successful life. The key is in the Word of God. We are supposed to meditate on it, day and night, so much so, that it becomes part of our speech. We are on the right track memorizing it, because that’s what God desires.

How has this verse spoken to you as you try and memorize it this week? Do you have the desire to meditate on it day and night? If not, ask God to give you the desire. He will help you.

Tip of the Week

My tip for you this week is to break down the verse into smaller phrases and memorize them one by one just like how I split them above. Read the verse, understand the context and carefully break it where it makes sense. Then go over each phrase and memorize them. Also, when you are trying to memorize the entire verse at the end, don’t forget the connector words like “but” and “then”.

Update:

Here is a useful diagram to help you remember the key phrases in the verse. Use it as a road-map to remember the verse easily.

I enjoy learning from God’s word, it amazes me, the wisdom and treasures of God and the way He reveals them to me day after day in a profound manner. In this space I share with you what I’ve learnt through my time with the Word. I earnestly believe that learning alone isn’t sufficient but walking in the word is crucial in a believer’s life. As much as I desire to walk in the word, it’s not always easy. My hope is to encourage you, my dear friend, in your walk with God with words that He has used to strengthen my own walk with Him.
