Memory Verse Monday – Week 13

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1

This verse, which is in the beginning of a new chapter has the word “Therefore” which prompts us to look at the last verse of the previous chapter which is, “I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.” (Romans 7:25) Earlier on, Paul was talking about his constant battle with the good that he wills to do and the evil that he does not want to be a part of. It’s a battle and he is crying for help. “O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Romans 7:24)

Eventually, Christ comes to his rescue. What the law could not do, “God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh” (Romans 8:3) The law only condemned. But in Christ, we are made free, free from all our sins.

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1 Memory Verse Monday - Week 13

Since Jesus Christ, who knew no sin was made a substitute for us, we, who believe in Him, are given the righteousness of God. This is called justification by faith and for this reason we don’t have any condemnation, because we are in Christ Jesus. One of the mysteries of God which we can keep on wondering but never understand fully!

Going back to Paul’s struggle in chapter 7, he could not live up to do good and be good on his own, with his carnal flesh. That is why we are given the Spirit of God. “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.” (Romans 8:5)

So there are two takeaways from this verse in Romans 8:1, when we believe in Jesus Christ. First, we have no condemnation and second, we can live according to the Spirit!

I enjoy learning from God’s word, it amazes me, the wisdom and treasures of God and the way He reveals them to me day after day in a profound manner. In this space I share with you what I’ve learnt through my time with the Word. I earnestly believe that learning alone isn’t sufficient but walking in the word is crucial in a believer’s life. As much as I desire to walk in the word, it’s not always easy. My hope is to encourage you, my dear friend, in your walk with God with words that He has used to strengthen my own walk with Him.
