A Journey to Victorious Praying – Bill Thrasher

This year, I’m focusing on cultivating a disciplined prayer life and I’m bringing you along my journey. I’ve already shared with you 3 things I learned about prayer and How to pray for others. We savored a beautiful Ode to the Brokenhearted by Carolina Cisneros and reviewed Prayer by Timothy Keller. Today we will look at the book A Journey to Victorious Praying by Bill Thrasher.

The tagline of the book says, Finding Discipline and Delight in your Prayer Life. When I read that, I was immediately convinced to read it, because that’s exactly what I was trying to pursue. And let me tell you, the book did not disappoint me. It is filled with illustrations, practical tips, personal stories and quotations from legendary prayer warriors. Each driving home the one goal of finding discipline and delight in your prayer life.

A Journey to Victorious Prayer – Layout & How to read

A Journey to Victorious Prayer is laid out in 9 sections with 30 lessons so to speak. You could spread it over a month and slowly savor each nugget and incorporate the valuable lessons learned each day.

Insights from the Book

No one ever just decides to be a prayer warrior. God does something in a life that makes the person sense this need of God. ~ Bill Thrasher

How true! We all have this desire to be incessant in praying, but something happens that in fact makes that desire an absolute urgency. We suddenly have the need to get all the help we want. In his sections, Bill enlists a few help we can make use of. The help of our weaknesses, the Holy Spirit, Companionship, Scripture, fasting, and worship.

I’ve discovered that the scripture is a great help when it comes to prayer. In our weaknesses, in doubts, and in a dozen other situations, simply praying the scripture is delightful. That’s one of the many reasons why we need to memorize scripture, so we can use it in our prayers.

My Favorite Part of the book

My favorite section of the book was The Power of Praise. Understanding the importance of worship and its role in a believer’s spiritual life is essential. Bill Thrasher portrays that in 4 chapters and it was enlightening. But my lightbulb moment was when he quoted Daniel 4:34, when King Nebuchadnezzar, after he was humiliated like an oxen, lifted his eyes to heaven and praised the most High God. “Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who walk in pride He is able to put down.” (Daniel 4:37)

I enjoy learning from God’s word, it amazes me, the wisdom and treasures of God and the way He reveals them to me day after day in a profound manner. In this space I share with you what I’ve learnt through my time with the Word. I earnestly believe that learning alone isn’t sufficient but walking in the word is crucial in a believer’s life. As much as I desire to walk in the word, it’s not always easy. My hope is to encourage you, my dear friend, in your walk with God with words that He has used to strengthen my own walk with Him.

  • Alice, I was so delighted to see I was your neighbor at Inspire Me Monday!

Thank you so much for sharing a review of what appears to be an excellent book on prayer. His quote about the desire for incessant praying becoming an absolute urgency caused me to really pause and reflect upon. I confess that it seems like when I spend a lot of time in the Word, my prayer life suffers, yet when I spend a lot of time in prayer, my Word time suffers.

Yet the answer is to pray over the very Scripture that I am suffering. I don’t know why this is something that I can forget so easily. A well-worn Bible is one thing, but a prayed over Bible is a whole other thing.

I leave here feeling encouraged and edified.

    Blessings,

    • Karen, you bring out a wonderful point, “prayed over Bible”. Yes, the Word and Prayer needs to go hand in hand. Thanks for stopping by. I’m glad this encouraged you.

This sounds like a great book, Alice! I’ll have to keep my eye out for it.
