Memory Verse Monday – Week 33

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

Jeremiah is writing to the captives in Babylon, the words he had received from the Lord. “I know”, God says. Isn’t that a huge comfort? I see that you are captives now, I see your pain and anguish. However, “I will bring you back from your captivity; I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you to the place from which I cause you to be carried away captive.” (Jeremiah 29:14)

He knows what is about to happen in the future, He knows your uncertainties. He knows.

We, on the other hand, tend to be in one of these two modes. We are either super confident about our future and turn on a self-help mode. Or we panic and become restless and switch to despair mode. If only we knew, He knew!

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 Memory Verse Monday - Week 33

Though the passage in Jeremiah was addressed to the people in captivity, our God is an unchanging God. We learn a thing or two from His nature here. He cares for us and watches over us. His promises toward us are unbroken. He knows. “For surely there is a hereafter, And your hope will not be cut off.” Proverbs 23:18

But there is a catch. Wedged between the promises in verse 11 and 14 is this clause. “And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)

Just the knowledge of an all knowing and all sufficient God isn’t enough. We need to seek Him, constantly, earnestly and whole heartedly. Do you trust in a Sovereign and all knowing God? Then, are you seeking Him? in your highs and in your lows. Because He knows and His plans for you are filled with Hope. Seek Him and you will find Him.

I enjoy learning from God’s word, it amazes me, the wisdom and treasures of God and the way He reveals them to me day after day in a profound manner. In this space I share with you what I’ve learnt through my time with the Word. I earnestly believe that learning alone isn’t sufficient but walking in the word is crucial in a believer’s life. As much as I desire to walk in the word, it’s not always easy. My hope is to encourage you, my dear friend, in your walk with God with words that He has used to strengthen my own walk with Him.

  • Jeremiah 29:11 is a favorite verse! And, yes, you are correct…there are days I’m changing modes like changing gears in a car, the super confident to the super lost! I am grateful to trust and know God’s word and His promises in times such as these, and to remind myself that He will show me the way! Thank you for sharing!

  • Hi Alice!

I think too often this verse is claimed in a more self-centered way. I very much appreciated the insights you shared about this verse in its true Biblical sense, putting the focus on the Lord and His knowledge and His Sovereign care.

Thanks so much for sharing this encouraging post!

    Blessings,

    Karen

  • Nice to “meet” you Alice. This verse has special meaning to me. It is the scripture that my mother quoted to me when I awakened in the hospital from a stroke 7 years ago. I carry that verse with me in every situation asI trust God’s plan for my life. Thank you for sharing this post and reminding us that God is always in control. I hope you have a fantastic weekend and may God bless you and yours. #saltandlight

One of my favorite verses! For soom reason, I had never made the connection to the verse about seeking God with all our hearts (probably because I memorized Bible verses…but not the numbers when I was a kid!).
