Day 7 ~ Like Apples of Gold in settings of Silver

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold
In settings of silver. Proverbs 25:11

You have to admit, next to thoughts, words are the toughest ones to control. A word fitly spoken? What does that even mean? Sometimes after speaking a mile long, I have to backtrack and ask, “what was the question again?” When we no longer use our words sparingly, it becomes distasteful.

The simile used here to describe a word fitly spoken is “apples of gold in settings of silver”. Solomon is trying to paint the picture of something that is elegant. Whether it was actual golden-yellow apples setup on a silver bowl or makebelieve golden apples on a silver setting or a decorative motif used in jewelry, we don’t quite know for sure. But his goal is to liken it to something beautiful, something luxurious, something very tasteful. Solomon could have been describing a centerpiece at his royal dining table, for all we know.

A well thought out response will benefit everyone involved. It will bless the heart of the speaker and the listener. We can’t stop listing all the good things said about a right word!

A soft answer turns away wrath;

The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly;

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life;

A man has joy by the answer of his mouth,
And a word spoken in due season, how good it is! Proverbs 15: 1,2,4,23

According to these verses, a rightly spoken word is so refreshing! If words are so precious and luxurious, why do we blurt it all out so easily? We need to use them wisely. Next time I have the urge to babble, I’ll picture a bunch of golden apples in a silver bowl, beautiful to behold, for me and for the listener.

I enjoy learning from God’s word, it amazes me, the wisdom and treasures of God and the way He reveals them to me day after day in a profound manner. In this space I share with you what I’ve learnt through my time with the Word. I earnestly believe that learning alone isn’t sufficient but walking in the word is crucial in a believer’s life. As much as I desire to walk in the word, it’s not always easy. My hope is to encourage you, my dear friend, in your walk with God with words that He has used to strengthen my own walk with Him.
