Day 8 ~ As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes

Day 8 ~ As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes

Day 8 ~ As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes

As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,
So is the lazy man to those who send him. Proverbs 10:26

There is a good measure of verses in Proverbs that speak to or about the sluggard. The famous one being, Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise,” (Proverbs 6:6) Laziness is something that God hates. The first order of business in the newly created world that God brought about was giving the man a job. “Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.” (Genesis 2:15)

Some verses in the Bible that talk about the laziness and its effects are pretty intense. But they are there for a reason. God prescribed man labor in the beginning so he can fend for himself, be purposeful and sustain his household. When laziness creeps in, the whole ecosystem is affected.

Biblical Similes - As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes

This particular verse talks about the effects of a lazy man on the person who employed him. He is “As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes” of his master. The Dental Geek says that any highly acidic substances including vinegar that comes in contact with the teeth will slowly wear out the enamel leaving you far more likely to get a cavity. Smoke irritates the tender vessels in the eyes and continuos exposure slowly deteriorates the vision. In both cases, we see irritation and eventual loss.

So is a lazy man, says Solomon to his employer. He causes continuous frustration and permanent damage. Remember the story of the talents and the person who received one talent. He was lazy and buried it, clearly making the master angry. Let’s not forget the command, that whatever we do, we ought to do it for God’s glory.
