Day 9 ~ Like the Owner of a House

Day 9 ~ Like the Owner of a House

Day 9 ~ Like the Owner of a House

He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.” Matthew 13:52 (NIV)

This verse appears in Matthew chapter 13 where we find all the parables related to the kingdom of heaven. Verse 52 follows Jesus’ question to his disciples if they understood Him, to which they replied affirmatively.

This is an interesting simile in that it puts forth both old and new as essentially good and important. Contrary to the common saying of “out with the old, in with the new”, in this passage, Jesus places the old beside the new.

Teachers of the law, have been learning, memorizing and interpreting the laws which they have been bestowed with. Now that Jesus Christ has come into the world and was about to die on the cross, He was fulfilling many prophesies of the old and establishing some new laws. He was birthing new treasures of Salvation, Justification by faith, Regeneration, Sanctification, Resurrection, and Restoration. Although these things were prophesied from of old and have been personified several times in the Old Testament, they were going to be fulfilled by the actual ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

If the same teachers of the law were going to become ambassadors of the kingdom of Heaven, they better bring out both the old and new treasures from their spiritual storeroom. The age-old truths of creation, fall, promise, and prophecies, seasoned well with the new principles of the cross, faith, and eternal life make for the perfect recipe to the kingdom of heaven.
