Memory Verse Monday – Week 41

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

This is one of those verses in which a little backstory helps so much in understanding the bridge words. In this verse, to explain the words “common to man”, Paul gives a little history lesson in verses 1 through 12. Although the entire tribe traveled together, eating the same food, and experiencing the same wonders, God was not pleased with all of them. Some of them disobeyed, whined, and even became idolaters.

However, Paul points out that “these things became our examples”. “Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition,” (V11) They happened for a reason and they were recorded for a reason, to serve as examples for us.

Now when you read the first half of our verse, “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man”, the words “common to man” will make more sense. We’ve been experiencing trials no different from people in older days. The temptations are the same, but so is the faithfulness of God. He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able. How much will you be able? So much as you are tempted because that’s how much God has allowed.

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 Memory Verse Monday - Week 42

Also, remember that every temptation has a way of escape. We’ve seen it in the history lessons and so we know we also have one for each of our temptations. The question is, are you going to choose the way of escape over the temptation? Let history show you the way!

I enjoy learning from God’s word, it amazes me, the wisdom and treasures of God and the way He reveals them to me day after day in a profound manner. In this space I share with you what I’ve learnt through my time with the Word. I earnestly believe that learning alone isn’t sufficient but walking in the word is crucial in a believer’s life. As much as I desire to walk in the word, it’s not always easy. My hope is to encourage you, my dear friend, in your walk with God with words that He has used to strengthen my own walk with Him.
