Day 24 ~ Skip like a Calf

Day 24 ~ Skip like a Calf

Day 24 ~ Skip like a Calf

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars,
Yes, the Lord splinters the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes them also skip like a calf,
Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox. Psalm 29:5-6

Psalm 29 is David’s psalm and in it, he is praising God and giving Him the glory due to His name. More specifically, David is marveled at the voice of God. He is so enthralled by God’s voice that he started pouring forth his praises as a psalm.

Let’s see how powerful God’s voice is.

  • It is thunder over mighty waters
  •  Powerful and Majestic
  •  Breaks the cedars
  •  Makes Lebanon leap like a calf and Sirion like a young wild ox
  •  Strikes with flashes of lightning
  •  Shakes the desert, the desert of Kadesh
  •  Twists the oaks
  •  Strips the forests bare

That is quite a big list! If you close your eyes for a second and go over the physical rendition of this list, it will marvel you. This voice was involved in creation. For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.” Psalm 33:9

The simile employed here is that of skipping and jumping of a calf and young ox. Lebanon and Sirion are mountains. Sirion is another name for Mount Hermon (Deuteronomy 3:9) The picture is that of these mountain forests swaying back and forth, just like the leaping and jumping of young animals.

A few days ago, we saw the radiance of sun exhibiting God’s glory. This is a similar impression. All nature points to the creator. Note that the creator, not the creation is to be worshipped. Sometimes, it is too easy for people to be overwhelmed by the beauty of creation that they miss the fine line and start worshipping the creation. Romans 1 has a serious warning about that situation.

because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened… and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things… who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Romans 1:21,23,25

David, therefore, draws our attention back to the creator and attributes all glory to Him. “And in His temple, everyone says, “Glory!”” (v9) Give Him the glory, give Him the honor and worship only Him.

I enjoy learning from God’s word, it amazes me, the wisdom and treasures of God and the way He reveals them to me day after day in a profound manner. In this space I share with you what I’ve learnt through my time with the Word. I earnestly believe that learning alone isn’t sufficient but walking in the word is crucial in a believer’s life. As much as I desire to walk in the word, it’s not always easy. My hope is to encourage you, my dear friend, in your walk with God with words that He has used to strengthen my own walk with Him.
