Day 25 ~ Like water, like Wax, like a Potsherd

Day 25 ~ Like water, like Wax, like a Potsherd

I am poured out like water,
And all My bones are out of joint;
My heart is like wax;
It has melted within Me.
My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
And My tongue clings to My jaws;
You have brought Me to the dust of death. Psalm 22:14-15

Again, a beautiful psalm by David. But this time, it’s special, because Psalm 22 is one of the Messianic Psalms, which talk about the birth, life, death, burial or resurrection of Jesus Christ. It does so in a prophetical and poetic way, looking forward to the event.

Psalm 22 is a focused on the rejection and trial of Jesus Christ before His crucifixion. Various figures of speech are at play here, but today we are just looking at 2 verses which describes the physical agony of Jesus as He was being dragged around, uphill, with a cross on His shoulders.

I am poured out like water, he says, which means that the exhaustion has caused him to be in a liquefied state if you can imagine how that feels. All energy has been drained out. My heart is melted within me like wax, which means that none of the organs, especially the heart is doing what it’s supposed to do. They are shutting down. He says His strength is dried like a potsherd. Potsherd is “a broken piece of ceramic material, especially one found on an archaeological site.” Since it’s dried up and all moisture has been sucked out over time, its too fragile and can be easily shattered. Such was the condition of his body.

This Psalm has been referenced several times in the gospels indicating Christ’s sufferings on the cross. To imagine that our Lord Jesus Christ went through these stages of sufferings, for me, baffles me. But it convicts me at the same time. He did it, He actually did it.

Like water, like wax, like a potsherd,

He was broken, beaten and bruised.

Strength, tongue, and bones dried,

For me, He died.

That I might be

From sin’s shackles, forever free.

I enjoy learning from God’s word, it amazes me, the wisdom and treasures of God and the way He reveals them to me day after day in a profound manner. In this space I share with you what I’ve learnt through my time with the Word. I earnestly believe that learning alone isn’t sufficient but walking in the word is crucial in a believer’s life. As much as I desire to walk in the word, it’s not always easy. My hope is to encourage you, my dear friend, in your walk with God with words that He has used to strengthen my own walk with Him.
