Day 27 ~ Like a Man observing his Natural Face in a Mirror

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. James 1:22-24

Yesterday, we saw James imparting some wise words on being a Believer and not a Doubter. Further down, in the same chapter, he talks about being doers and not hearers only. The Greeks appreciated wisdom, literature, and knowledge and pursued it. With that background, if they approached the Scriptures, they would be deceiving themselves. Because, when it comes to the word of God, doing is as important as hearing. “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.” (Revelation 1:3)

The word of God is living and powerful (Hebrews 4:12) and is useful for “doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). It is like looking in a mirror. Can you imagine walking out the door in the morning, without a glance at the mirror? I mean, you could, but you wouldn’t. No matter how late you are, you will make sure to get a glimpse of yourself, ensure your hair is right, your makeup is alright and that you are presentable. You look at the mirror, so you can correct any mistakes. You wouldn’t ignore any faults after you’ve had the chance to see yourself in the mirror.

But that’s exactly what a hearer-only person does. After looking at the word of God, and getting the indication of what needs to be corrected, he walks away, totally ignoring the discipline. It’s not the careless hearing of the word which James rebukes, but the neglect to carry into practice what is heard. You could be a careful listener and still walk away not caring about how it impacts you.

I enjoy learning from God’s word, it amazes me, the wisdom and treasures of God and the way He reveals them to me day after day in a profound manner. In this space I share with you what I’ve learnt through my time with the Word. I earnestly believe that learning alone isn’t sufficient but walking in the word is crucial in a believer’s life. As much as I desire to walk in the word, it’s not always easy. My hope is to encourage you, my dear friend, in your walk with God with words that He has used to strengthen my own walk with Him.
